Cyprus has high educational standards

The education standards in Cyprus are equivalent to those of other advanced nations worldwide. The Ministry of Education and Culture regulates pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher education in Cyprus, including the enrolment of foreign students. European citizens residing in Cyprus have the right to attend public schools, while private schools that offer primary, secondary, and higher education are also available for foreign students in Cyprus.

While Greek is typically the language of instruction, private schools primarily use English. The state schools provide extra Greek language courses for students who do not speak the language. Wearing uniforms is mandatory in all Cyprus schools, with private schools being stricter than public schools.

Children aged three and above are eligible to attend pre-primary schools, which is mandatory before enrolling in primary school for children between six and twelve years old. Secondary education is divided into lower, upper, and technical and vocational education. Only gymnasio, which is a three-year program, is required for students aged 12 to 15 years.

The school day in Cyprus typically lasts from 7.30 to 8.00 hours, depending on the school and grade, and ends between 13.15 and 14.00. The school day comprises seven 40-minute lessons followed by three 40-minute breaks for the students.

The academic year in Cyprus is divided into three terms, which starts from early September to early June. The first term ends before Christmas, while the second term starts after January 6 and ends before Holy Week, which is the week before Easter. The third term commences a week after Easter and ends in early June. Christmas and Easter are the significant holidays during the academic year, each with a two-week break. Summer vacation begins in June and ends in September.
